It’s been more than two months since its release, and with a new free mod, Arena of the Gods, that makes the game even greater and two expansion packs waiting to be released (the first one, the Chinese-based Immortal Pillars has already been announced), Age of Mythology: Retold is being touted as one of the best RTS remakes of all time, and… wait for it… the way Warcraft 3: Reforged should have been developed in the first place.
This comes more as a rant from the gaming community, especially those who are fond of RTS, as last week, Blizzard released reforged versions of Warcraft 1, and 2, along with a patch that completely overhauls the experience of playing Warcraft 3: Reforged.
On Reddit, gamers expressed that Warcraft 3: Reforged should have been developed the same way Age of Mythology: Retold was, later praising the latter for being one of the best RTS remakes of all time.
Age of Mythology Retold is one of the best remasters, especially for an RTS. It has it’s share of desync issues and bugs, but overall it’s a huge upgrade over the original game from 2002. This Warcraft 3 version 2.0 is just about the laziest effort Microsoft/Blizzard could come up with after the utter disgrace that was Reforged. Warcraft 3 aged better visually than AoM, but it’s incredible seeing AoM with improved visuals. Warcraft 3 deserves better.
Released in 2020, Warcraft 3: Reforged received a mostly negative reception. Many criticized the game for its many bugs and issues and Blizzard’s inability to fix them.
In many ways, they’re right. I played the game last year, and three years after its release, Warcraft 3: Reforged still crashed in many campaigns. It took me a while to set it up so I wouldn’t experience a sudden crash. While I haven’t played patch 2.0 yet, that bug kept me out of Warcraft 3: Reforged for a while.
With the release of Warcraft 1, and 2 Reforged last week during the game’s 30th anniversary, the RTS community was hoping for a new title in the Warcraft series, more specifically Warcraft 4, now the RTS – thanks to Age of Mythology: Retold – is back in the game and gaining popularity once again. However, Blizzard didn’t mention any new titles, and we’re left thinking about how Warcraft 3: Reforged would have looked if it had followed the Age of Mythology: Retold’s developing methods.
Meanwhile, we can only hope Warcraft 4 might be coming one day. Until then, there is an increasing rumor that the two games might release a collaborative project together, although I can’t really see how, since the two games have quite different gameplay. However, the Age of Mythology: Retold’s team took to X to celebrate the classic Warcraft on its anniversary, and Microsoft-owned studios developed the two games, so basically, they’re officially siblings.
Should we hope for something? Definitely, yes.
You can get Age of Mythology: Retold on Steam now, and you can also get Warcraft 1, 2, 3: Reforged from BattleNet now.
