- It can only be recruited if you worship Zeus.
- You need to choose Hera as your Mythic God.
- Medusa can petrify units.
Medusa is one of those Myth units in Age of Mythology: Retold that are ambivalent. Some say they’re solid, but others say they’re not worth it. And the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Granted by choosing Hera, in the Mythic Age, available only under Zeus’ guidance, Medusa in a ranged unit with a powerful blow (35) that has a fairly decent attack (including a 5 Crush attack, which means it’s effective against buildings), and true to her nature, is also able to petrify units, dealing them huge damage, and rendering them unmovable, or straight down killing them on the spot (if they have a health pool less than 400 HP).
However, Age of Mythology: Retold changed Medusa, compared to the version from the original game. In the original, Medusa’s Petrification ability would instantly kill any unit regardless of its health pool (and with a few exceptions, of course, with the Titan being one of them);
Retold, on the other hand, gives Petrification the ability to deal 400 damage. Anything within that range will die, but outside of that, it will survive.
Age of Mythology: Retold – Is Medusa worth it?
100% honesty? Yes. Medusa is worth it, especially if you want to build an army of Myth units, which is recommended under Zeus’ guidance. Hera will also have some tech advancements for Medusa, making it stronger and more viable.
However, there is one tiny thing you need to consider. Medusa is best effective when micro-managed. Her Petrification ability must be managed carefully to have the best chance of diminishing your enemy’s army.
It must be used, first and foremost, on stronger units, so you’ll have to be careful not to waste it on trivial weak units, such as easily killable infantry.
This will require better coordination of your gameplay and possibly even ignoring your whole army for a few seconds. It would be best if Medusai were used from a safe distance in battle to target strong myth units.
With this strategy, you can easily win the battles.
