It’s been almost a month since the release of Age of Mythology: Retold, and while the reception has been overwhelmingly positive, and the community is enjoying this remake of the legendary RTS classic, some players are still sticking to the original game, and are not taking lightly the changes made to the version’s Steam page.

If you’re thinking about purchasing Age of Mythology: Extended Version, you’ll notice that once you visit its Steam page, you’ll be greeted with a gray-filtered header. Many take this as a poor marketing strategy from Microsoft to promote the newer Age of Mythology: Retold.

Microsoft switching Age of Mythology illustrations to gray to promote the remake is another level of lame

The Reddit post has gained a considerable number of votes in a short time span (it was originally posted 13 hours ago as I’m writing this), with almost 3,000 upvotes, meaning that the sentiment is not singular.

Some other fans of the fame share this feeling:

still, pretty silly way of making people feel like their versions are invalid now

It disrespects the old developers and the effort they put into making the game when their remade version is going to be using their code and even their visuals as a basis for the “upgraded version”. It’s just a money grab.

While others see no issue with it:

Right click on that big man, change it.

They did this with the old AoE versions as well. I don’t mind it, it lets everyone know that this is an old version, since the subtitles that they use for these remakes are really confusing.

I think it’s very mild, much better than shutting down servers, disabling features, filling it with ads.

Don’t take it too seriously. It is not that serious.

It’s worth mentioning that Age of Mythology: Extended Edition can still be purchased on Steam, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. So, if you prefer the original version of the game, you can still get it. On Steam, headers can be customized, so you can also change the gray one with a more colored one.

Ultimately, discussions like these will be inevitable when releasing remakes of legendary games, but fortunately, Age of Mythology: Retold follows the original’s footsteps, and coming from someone who’s been playing it for almost two decades now, the Retold versions are just as good,

What do you think about it?
