Microsoft’s World’s Edge and Meta Plays have joined forces to organize the Wrath of the Gods, a major Age of Mythology: Retold tournament with a $15,000 prize pool.
The tournament will consist of three single-elimination qualifiers, each with a $1,000 prize pool, to be held on November 30-December 1, December 7-8, and December 14-15. Then, the top 16 players will progress to the main event, a tournament with a $12,000 prize pool to be held on December 21-22.
All events will be streamed and communicated via the Meta Plays Discord. The hosts for the event include Boit, Meta Plays, AoLIronMaiden, Yodesla, and Fophuxake.
In the official announcement, Meta Plays says the tournament will use a point system to select the top 16 players from the qualifiers based on their round performance. In addition to the prize money, the top four players will receive custom medals reflecting their placement.
The official live streamers for the event are Boit, Meta Plays, AoLIronMaiden, Yodesla, and Fophuxake. The hosts will also provide replay packs to the community for replay casts or learning purposes. The three qualifiers will each award a base amount of 10,000 league points, with the potential for bonus points based on the number of players.
Some players will also receive points for losing a match, which Meta Plays says is to “discourage early conceding.”
Meta Plays says it’s developed cosmetic features in the Age of Mythology seasonal ranking ladder for the event. Based on a player’s position on the ladder, they’ll be assigned to a “class” (D, C, B, A, S), each of which will feature its badge. The top four players will receive medals corresponding to their final tournament placement.
Meta Plays plans to host more Age of Mythology leagues after Wrath of the Gods, even though the company has recently been “away” from the Age of Mythology scene. For some of the Microsoft-sponsored events, Meta Plays will act as co-hosts, and in the new year, Meta Plays will announce its leagues.
