Key notes
- Some units, such as Hersirs or Godi, generate Favor simply by existing.
- However, aside from that, you’ll need to constantly harass your enemies to earn Favor.
Similar to the Atlantean Pantheon, Age of Mythology: Retold drastically changed the way Norse earn Favor, compared to the original game (which you can still get on Steam, by the way).
Let’s keep it simple: in Age of Mythology: Retold, the Norse Pantheon earns Favor by engaging in combat. Compared to the other Pantheons, who can gather this precious resource relatively safely, the Norse must battle to earn Favor. So, to train Myth units, research Titans, and so on, you need to fight.
However, one of the best qualities of this Pantheon is that Norse units are incredible in battle and deal great damage compared to the other Pantheons; thus, being aggressive is almost natural when playing with it.
In both versions of the game, combat generates Favor for the Norse, but Age of Mythology: Retold changed the way (or rather, the quantity) you’re earning it.
In the original game, there is a standard amount of favor earned by each unit battling and a favor bounty different for each damaged target. It’s worth mentioning that the original game doesn’t allow Norse Myth Units to generate favor through combat.
Age of Mythology: Retold no longer resorts to favor bounties, and instead, it depends on the attacker and the amount of damage they dealt to a certain target. Plus, the new version allows Myth units to generate Favor through combat, as it follows:
- Human soldiers, Heroes, Gatherers, and Dwarves generate 1 Favor per 80 damage dealt.
- Ships generate 1 per 160 damage dealt.
- Odin’s Great Hall units (Hersir, Jarls, Godi, Raiding Cavalry) generate 1 per 64 damage dealt.
- Myth units trained from Temples and Docks (Loki’s myth units don’t count here), and the Nidhogg generate 1 per 160 damage dealt.
Dealing damage to certain targets also increases the rate of generating Favor for the Norse in Age of Mythology Retold. Here’s a breakdown:
- Hunting animals increases Favor generation by 2×
- Attacking herding animals (including chickens) increases Favor generation by 10×
- Damaging Sentry or Guard Towers increases Favor generation by 0.5×
- Damaging other buildings increases Favor generation by 0.1×
- Attacking Walls and Gates offers no Favor
It’s also worth mentioning that certain creatures obtained from Norse God Powers, such as Walking Woods, offer no Favor when battling. On the other hand, recruiting Norse heroes, such as Hersir or Godi (the Hersir ranged counterpart, only available in Retold), will generate 0.01 Favor per second simply by existing. Researching certain tech, such as Thor’s Hammer of Thunder, doubles that amount for Hersirs.
You should also know that if you gathered too much Favor playing as Norse in Age of Mythology: Retold, it will impact the speed at which you can generate it, which is a downside, considering the Norse Pantheons has some of the best Major Gods in the game. For example, the rate will slow down once you gather 100 Favor from combat. The rate will gradually decrease to 0.5X upon reaching 300 Favor.
As you can see, generating Favor as Norse in Age of Mythology: Retold might be the hardest in the entire game. While the other Pantheons have safer ways of doing so, you’ll need to be aggressive to constantly generate this precious resource.
