Age of Mythology: Retold Update

A new update has just been released for Age of Mythology: Retold, bringing great stability and performance improvements to the game. If you’ve been having trouble with crashes or performance issues, this is likely the update for you.

One of the main focuses of this update is improving the game’s performance, especially for those playing on lower-spec machines. This update should result in a more stable experience, mainly when playing the game’s Scenario Editor or getting into the late game.

The update also brings “fixes for various situations where a crash could occur,” in addition to performance improvements when refreshing your friend list. The game should no longer experience significant performance drops in the main menu when you have many friends. The game’s Friends list has also been improved, with friends now sorted by who’s online and who’s not.

Additionally, the update should fix issues where you couldn’t load a save game, and updates to the save game format have been made to ensure ongoing stability in later patches. However, you’ll need to contact support if you experience problems with saved games from previous patches.

This update includes several multiplayer-focused improvements. The multiplayer lobby now features several new filters to make finding the games you want to join easier. The Browse Games lobby is now searchable by Game ID, Game ID URLs, and player names, and the list should now show a more complete collection of available games. The filter functionality has been improved to find relevant games, and old games that are stale and no longer active or joinable should be much less likely to appear in the list.

As always, the update brings several visual improvements to the game, such as a new visual effect for idle villagers and a more accurate range indicator for the Norse myth unit Nidhogg. There are also a ton of bug fixes and quality-of-life changes in this update, including the return of the “Raids” chat channel.

Several other changes in the update are worth mentioning. For one, 4v4 games are now available in the Quick Play and Ranked modes, and a bug causing chat messages to appear twice for the sender has been fixed.

The release notes are long, but if you’re interested in every change in this update, you can check them out on the Age of Mythology forum.

The update is available now for Age of Mythology: Retold players on PC. The game should automatically update as long as you have automatic updates enabled in the Microsoft Store or Steam.

That’s just a small selection of the changes in this update. For the full list, head over to the game’s official website. And if you’ve yet to give Age of Mythology: Retold a try, it’s available on the Microsoft Store, Steam, and the Xbox app for Windows 11.

Edit: The game received a bunch of fixes after this week’s update. Here’s a list.

  • Fixed a rare crash related to certain integrated GPUs.
  • Fixed an issue with slow/clunky building rotation speed introduced in the previous update.
  • Fixed an issue where disconnecting whilst entering quick/ranked match locks you out of those modes until closing and restarting the game.
  • Fixed an issue where multiple resource timers caused small but noticeable dips in framerate.
  • Fixed an issue where newly built town centers were not properly generating Lush for Gaia.
  • Fixed an occasional visual glitch for Chariot Archers when they were in motion or attacking.
  • Various other crash and stability fixes.
