Colossus is one of the strongest myth units in Age of Mythology: Retold and something I like to call mini-Titans. Why? They’re incredibly resilient, can regenerate health, and can take much damage before being brought down.

Colossus is the myth unit granted by Hephaestus, a Mythic God available to all Major Greek Gods within this Pantheon. It’s a colossal creature (duh), available later in the game once you reach the Mythic Age, and it usually stands out in a battle due to its enormous size – for a regular myth unit, at least.

Why is the Colossus a mini-Titan in the Age of Mythology?

In Age of Mythology, the Colossus has always been regarded as an effective-against-all kind of unit, and it’s usually dreaded on the battlefield: it’s hard to kill it. It has 1200 Hit Points by default, and its upgrades, the Hand of Talos and Shoulder of Talos, bring it to 1800 Hit Points, making it highly durable.

This unit can also regenerate hitpoints by eating gold mines or trees, and it’s an excellent way to deplete your opponents from resources faster. Besides its resilience, which makes killing harder, it can effectively eliminate a gold mine currently mined by the enemy.

Despite being a myth unit, it’s fairly resilient against heroes, as well, and it can take down an army of 3 or 4 heroes on its own. Against regular infantry, it’s even better. It will take them much longer to bring the Colossus down, giving you time to bring forth additional infantry.

The downsides? It costs a lot, and it’s slow. The first one is not really an issue. As a unit, Colossus is only available in the Mythic Age, and by then, you should have your economy all going up. Plus, Hephaestus’ God Power, the Plenty Vault, will ensure you never run out of resources. For your head up, it costs 350 Gold, 35 Favor, and a population of 4.

Conversely, the Colossus is probably one of the slowest creatures in Age of Mythology. For this reason, you might want to use it as a tank. Sending it in front to deal with the melee units while your archers deal with the enemy’s infantry. Protect it against units that would slow it down even further, such as Caladria, Frost Giants, Argus, Mummy, or Medusa.

In a world full of Nidhoggs and Sons of Osiris, the Colossus can be a formidable unit in its own right. Definitely consider recruiting it more often.

You can get Age of Mythology: Retold on Steam now. Its new mod, Arena of the Gods, is free and incredibly fun.
