Those playing with the Norse Patheon in Age of Mythology: Retold know that there is a struggle in the Classical Age, especially when playing with Thor, because there are two Minor Gods who both offer healing abilities through their myth units, Valkyrie and God Powers, Healing Spring.

Freya grants the player the Valkyrie, a cavalry myth unit capable of healing your other units aside from its powerful attacks. Forseti gives you the Healing Spring God Power, which, once cast, summons a Healing Spring that heals all units near it.

So, of course, the struggle is real: which one should you choose? Freya or Forseti? Valkyrie or the Healing Spring.

For the first question, you’ll find the answer in our comprehensive guide on all of the Norse Minor Gods. But if that doesn’t convince you, then maybe it’s all up to these healing capabilities. So, which one is better: Valkyrie or Healing Spring?

Age of Mythology: Retold – Valkyrie VS Healing Spring

The Healing Spring in Age of Mythology is one of the fewest ways to help you mass heal your army after an attack. When cast, it heals all nearby units, idle (faster healing) and non-idle (slower healing) in a medium radius. Like Plenty Vault, it is indestructible but capturable, so you can lose it as long as it’s not defended.

Contrary to the original game (which you can still purchase), Retold lets you cast Healing Spring multiple times, so you can enhance each of your bases with one.

However, it does nothing outside of its healing abilities and line of sight. Since it’s capturable, you can easily lose its line of sight, and since it cannot be moved, if the enemy takes the fight even a few points of radius away, you’ll lose the healing.

On the other hand, the Valkyrie in Age of Mythology is the quintessential Norse myth unit and one of the most popular myth units in the game. It can heal a single target fast and is a formidable myth unit that can take small armies by itself.

Plus, they can be upgraded to Shieldmaiden Valkyries, which gives them a +50% attack and improves their healing rate by +33%, making them heal even faster (7.5 HP/s to 10 HP/s). Their healing rate also increases with Age, and each one of them will boost it: the Heroic and Mythic Age will each boost it by 20% for a total of 40%, and you reach the Wonder Age (after you build a Wonder), the Valkyrie will heal at double the rate.

Plus, regarding its non-healing abilities, the Valkyrie will also benefit from all the myth unit tech advancements, which further increases its stats.

Still not convinced which one to choose? Think about this: if you want to preserve your armies, you’ll need to return to the Healing Spring after each battle. Sure, you can cast Healing Spring on the spot, but it’ll cost you Favor you would prefer not to lose over it.

With the Valkyrie (or two or three), you can heal those units on the move, and you won’t have to spend time returning to the Healing Spring. This will also be effective when attacking your enemy, as leaving the enemy’s base to heal your units will give your enemies time to repair/restore and recruit an army.

So, at this point, I think it’s obvious what to choose, but let me make it clear: the Valkryie. This myth unit is simply one of the best in the entire Age of Mythology: Retold.
