age of mythology hydra

Hydra has always been one of my favorite myth units in the entire Age of Mythology, and playing Retold just made me fall in love with this creature even more.

Why? Because it’s incredibly strong if used properly. I would argue that Hydra is one of the most powerful myth units in the Age of Mythology: Retold and its versatility makes it even more powerful than those creatures that were granted in the Mythic Age.

Dyonisus (which is not a popular choice as a Minor God in the Greek Pantheon) grants the legendary Hydra in the Heroic Age, and given that this could be pretty early in the game, choosing Dyonisus only for this creature is often the best choice, as you can get a very powerful unit easily, and early, allowing you to not only defend yourself against infantry but also harass your enemy.

It’s also relatively cheap as it only costs 250 Food and 28 Favor, which means training 2 or 3 of them can easily boost your army to a formidable level.

It can also be upgraded to deal more damage by researching certain myth technology. However, as this would not be enough, the Hydra can also upgrade itself to become on par and even stronger than the myth units granted with the Mythic Age.

Why is Hydra more powerful than most Mythic Myth Units in Age of Mythology: Retold

Similar to the original game, the Hydra of the Age of Mythology: Retold can grow up to 5 heads when fighting other units. Each of these heads increases its damage by 100%. I repeat: 100%. This means you’ll end up with a creature that deals 5X its original damage: from its original 30 hacks and 15 crushes, it evolves to a maximum of 150 hacks and 75 crushes.

When fully evolved, the 5-headed Hydra becomes one of the most dangerous myth units in the game. While naturally vulnerable to heroes, this creature can take on small armies by itself and even other myth units with ease.

One of its best perks is that it’s also incredibly efficient against buildings. So you’ll easily destroy your enemies’ buildings with just two of them.

To upgrade the Hydra in a relatively safe environment, order it to attack wild animals that you can then harvest for Food with your Villagers. The Hydra will grow heads without getting any damage.
