Key notes
- Greeks are all about myth units, and their gods show it.
- However, some of them are better for infantry.
- Either way, choosing the best Greek Minor God is a hard task.
The Greek Minor Gods in Age of Mythology: Retold are, hands down, some of the best in the entire game. It’s already known that the Greek pantheon also has incredible Major Gods, and playing with it is suited for those new or beginners to Age of Mythology. Still, the truth is, its Minor Gods are also incredible: from powerful Myth Units to awesome technological advances or God Powers, playing with the Greek Pantheon might be a nightmare sometimes.
Why? It might be hard to do because you have to choose the best from the best. However, depending on your style of play (defensive or aggressive) and whether you consider playing in tournaments, in the end, it’s all about personal choice.
So, if you love to have an army of Minotaurs, Athena is the right choice, but Hermes’ Ceasefire might also be a powerful God Power if you’re planning to follow a certain Greek Build Order.
A Hydra is an exceptional Myth unit, but so is the Nemean Lyon, or the Underworld Passage God Power. While Hera’s Lightning Storm is devastating, Artemis’s Earthquake obliterates the enemy’s base. Hephaestus’ Colossus and Plently Vault (which is indestructible, by the way), are some of the beast Myth Units/God Powers in the whole game.
So, it’s hard to choose. But ultimately, the best Greek Minor Gods can only be one – in their respective ages, of course. Here’s our top.
The Best Greek Minor Gods in Age of Mythology: Retold
Classical Age
3. Hermes
Of all the Greek Minor Gods you can worship, starting with the Classical Age, Hermer is the weakest, but not the weakest, in all Age of Mythology: Retold. He’s available to worshippers of Zeus and Poseidon, and his tech usually favors the Cavalry Units.
His myth unit is the Centaur, a pretty resilient archer who can rain down arrows at enemies. His God Power is Ceasefire, which prevents all combat for a limited period, allowing players to make important decisions.
He’ll also grant you free Pegasus, and recruiting such units is free under his tutelage, which is a bonus for your economy early in the game. His technologies focus on Cavalry, giving them more attack, speed, and hitpoints.
Should you choose Hermes? Well, that’s up to you. If you want to play a more aggressive match, focusing on Cavalry, definitely go for Hermes. The tech also impacts Centaurs, so mix them with the rest of your army for the best result.
2. Ares
Ares is one of the strongest Minor Gods in Age of Mythology: Retold, and the second strongest Greek one for the Classical Age. Those who worship Poseidon and Hades, can choose him when they advance, and he’s pretty focused on Human Soldiers.
His myth unit is the Cyclops, a very resistant and strong myth unit, but unfortunately, a bit slow. However, it’s excellent against other units and buildings, giving you a clear advantage early in the game.
His God Power is Pestilence, and it will stop buildings from producing units, researching tech, and so on. This is best used when attacking your enemy and, in a combo with Cyclops, makes Ares a veritable Minor God.
Should you choose Ares? If you prefer to have an advantage early in the game and you love being aggressive, Ares is the right choice. Actually, it’s the best choice. With an army of Human Soldiers enhanced by his tech (which gives them more attack points), 2 Cyclops, and Pestilence, you can finish your enemy off in the first 15 minutes of a match.
1. Athena
If you’re playing with this Pantheon, Athena is the best Greek Minor God you can choose from the Classical Age in Age of Mythology: Retold. Those who worship Zeus and Hades can choose her, and she’s focused on Defense, giving your Infantry a much better chance to survive attacks.
Her myth unit is the legendary Minotaur, which is an all-around good unit against other myth units, infantry, and even buildings, making it perfect for early-game aggression. He’s so good he’s even part of a popular Greek Build Order.
Athena’s God Power is Restoration, which heals all damaged units and buildings in an area. This ability is excellent for both aggressive and defensive strategies.
Should you choose Athena? If you’re unsure about your strategies, Athena’s defensive capabilities and healing powers will keep your base or army alive when defending or attacking. So, as a general rule, Athena always rules (pun intended).
Heroic Age
3. Apollo
Apollo is a great choice for a Heroic Age Minor God when playing with the Greek Pantheon in Age of Mythology, mainly due to his God Power. His tech focuses on Archers, and he can chosen by those worshipping Zeus and Hades.
His myth unit is the Manticore, which is excellent against a group of infantry, and it hurles fireballs that can take out armies in seconds.
However, it is his God Power that is the best thing about Apollo. Underworld Passage functions similarly to Oranos’ Sky Passage, but you don’t require Citizens to build it. You can place it anywhere on the map, giving your army easy access to the enemy base.
Should you choose Apollo? If you play aggressively, this is the God to go, as his Manticore can easily wipe out armies, and ranged units can safely devastate the rest of it. Plus, the Underworld Passage is always a good idea for a fast movement across the map.
2. Aphrodite
Aphrodite, available to those who worship Poseidon and Hades, is one of the best Greek Minor Gods in the Age of Mythology: Retold when it comes to benefiting Villagers. Her tech will make your Villagers gather resources, including Favor, faster.
Her myth unit is the Nemean Lyon, which is a fast unit that is excellent against archers and buildings. It has a roar that can stun other units. Choosing Aphrodite will also get you access to the Argo, a hero ship unit originally only available to Poseidon when reaching the Mythic Age.
Her God Power is Curse, which can turn enemy units into Pigs that can be herded and harvested for Food. It can also be quite devastating when attacked.
Should you choose Aphrodite? If you value economic strength, then Aphrodite is the only way. Villagers will gather Favor faster than any other Pantheon, and you’ll be able to use God Powers more often, thanks to her.
1. Dionysus
Dionysus is the best Greek Minor God that you can choose when advancing to Heroic Age in Age of Mythology: Retold, and the answer is simple. His myth unit. He can be chosen when worshipping Zeus or Poseidon, and his tech focuses on Cavalry.
His myth units are the Hydra and the Scylla, which are ground and water counterparts. Although slow, these units can grow additional heads when killing enemies, up to 5 heads. A 5-headed Hydra has 3X attack of a regular Hydra, making it a nightmare on the battlefield.
His God Power is Bronze and will render your units almost indestructible for a short period of time. This God Power is perfect when attacking your enemies.
Should you choose Dionysus? Yes, if you like to play on the offensive. The Hydra and the Scylla give you powerful units to attack both on the ground and the sea, and an enhanced Cavalry is also dangerous.
Mythic Age
3. Artemis
Artemis’ Earthquake God Power makes her one of the strongest Greek Minor Gods you can choose in Age of Mythology: Retold, and if her myth unit weren’t so average, she would probably top this list. You can choose her if you’re worshipping Poseidon or Hades, and her tech focuses on Archers.
Her myth unit, however, is quite underwhelming: the Chimera spits fire at enemies, and it’s generally good against infantry, but it can be easily killed.
Her God Power can obliterate your enemy’s base in seconds, although it ineffective against units. However, it can be used when attacking, giving you an excellent intro that could mean the end of your enemy.
Should you choose Artemis? Her tech focusing on archers and her God Power make her a worthy Minor God to choose from. If you’re playing on the offensive and interested in eradicating your enemy’s base, then Armetis is the right Minor God to choose.
2. Hera
Hera, available only to those worshipping Zeus, is an excellent Minor God to choose in the Mythic Age. Her tech focus on Myth units and buildings, and her God Power is an excellent eradicator of units on the battlefield.
Her myth unit is the famous Medusa, a ranged creature that can petrify other units. Although it can be easily killed, it’s effective against other infantry.
Her God Power, though, can be the decisive point in the battlefield. Her Lighting Storm eradicates tens of units in under 15 seconds, making it perfect for those always on the offensive. Coupled with the other myth units and infantry within your army, this God Power can take down entire bases.
Should you choose Hera? If you’re playing with Zeus, choosing Hera is almost mandatory. He already gives a buff to myth units, and her abilities again empower them, making them incredibly strong and resilient.
1. Hephaestus
Without a doubt, Hephaestus is the best Greek Minor God in the entire Age of Mythology: Retold, and easily one of the best in the entire game. He can be chosen as a Mythic God by the worshippers of all three Major Gods, and his tech focuses on infantry and economic advancements.
His myth unit is the Colossus, a giant creature that has an enormous pool of hitpoints, attack and defense. Although slow, this unit is exceptional against buildings, and other infantry, and can regenerate by eating Gold or Trees.
His God Power is the Plenty Vault, an indestructible but capturable building that generates resources every second, making it a must for every economy.
Should you choose Hephaestus? Yes, if you’re reaching the Mythic Age and haven’t researched the Armory tech, choosing this god will make them cheaper. Plus, the Plenty Vault will ensure you never run out of resources again.
This is our list of the best Greek Minor Gods in the Age of Mythology: Retold, but you have to remember, all are good. Even if we have our list, you can still choose Artemis over Hephaestus if you enjoy playing with her. This list should give you a heads-up about every Greek god.
With this being said, what’s your list? We’re eager to see it.
