Key notes
- Choosing the Major God will decide whether you win or lose the match.
- While some Major Gods are easier, others are more fun to play with.
- Ultimately, this list is not definitive, but it should give you an idea next time you play.
Age of Mythology: Retold is all about choosing the best gods if you want to have a chance of winning in a multiplayer game. While it’s widely known that the gods in the game are pretty unbalanced, some of them are best at the beginning of a match (Hades, for example), while others are excellent for long matches (the Egyptian Ra).
Some gods are also perfect if you’re considering building an army of myth units (Loki, we see you), while others are perfect for destroying your enemies using military force (Odin).
Nevertheless, while Age of Mythology: Retold has its own set of Best Gods you can choose from, it’s worth mentioning that all are fun to play. You shouldn’t play only with Hades because we told you so (although that Sentinel God Power is incredible for beginners).
It’s also worth mentioning that each pantheon allowed gamers to select one of the three gods available in the original game, but in the Retold version, the Norse civilization adds one Major God, Freyir, which is entertaining to play with.
Lastly, we’re talking about Major Gods, and the list won’t include their Minor Gods, mainly because the selection of certain Minor Gods can entirely diminish the advantages of the Major Gods. Let’s look at the Best Major Gods in Each Pantheon in the Age of Mythology: Retold.
Age of Mythology: Retold – Which are the Best Gods In Each Pantheon?
The Greek Pantheon
- Zeus is singlehandedly one of the best Major Gods you can play with, not just the best Greek god in Age of Mythology: Retold. He has excellent abilities in-game, making him an amazing choice for players who love to rush in with brute force. His Bolt God Power, research upgrades, and timing for attacks or defenses are all crucial factors in determining whether you win or lose.
- His abilities include generating extra favor and less population space for myth units. Infantries do 50% more damage to buildings, and hoplites move 15% faster. Plus, Zeus’ heroes also have a greater lifespan.
- Hades is the best Major God in the game Age of Mythology: Retold, and he’s also a popular choice for players due to his incredible Sentinel power, which got upgraded by the new enhancements of the game. Hades’ god power summons an invulnerable sentinel that can root enemy units, and he has a research upgrade that boosts your archer unit’s range, attack and hitpoints.
- He also has a chance to resurrect fallen units as shades, units that can’t be healed but apply debuffs to enemy units. Last but not least, Hades has the Vaults of Erebus research upgrade, which generates gold over time, helping offset the cost of your powerful, expensive units.
- Poseidon is the weakest of the Major Greek Gods, but a fun choice to play with. If your map has a lot of water terrain, or the match takes place on islands, then it would be great to choose Poseidon, as his abilities will have you explore the seas faster than your enemies, thanks to the free Hippocampus unit that swaps when killed. His Lure God Power will also allow you to have a steady supply of Food sources right at the start of your match.
- His abilities include Militia spawning from razed buildings, units having more speed, markets and stables being 30% cheaper, and better marker exchange rates, which is crucial when running out of gold.
The Egyptian Pantheon
- Set is an Egyptian god and one of the best in Age of Mythology: Retold due to his aggressive abilities that can quickly turn you into the most powerful player in the game. Set’s god powers and research upgrades enhance his ability to get into a player’s grill. A player can generate a lot of military pressure with Set early in the game, and he has the Armory of Set, a unique building that can train all of his units.
- His abilities include summoning Animals of Set, which can greatly turn the battle to your advantage early in the game, priests able to convert wild animals for food or battle, and fewer resources spent on units (-25% Gold).
- Isis is an excellent choice for those who prefer to be resourceful in their matches. Her abilities to protect your base from the enemy’s God Power make her one of the best gods in Age of Mythology: Retold for defensive playing. You’ll have resources and population space to grow your army in a relatively safe space before you attack.
- Her abilities include +5 population to Town and Citadel Centers, shielding from enemy God Powers, monuments healing nearby units, and Prosperity, which makes your gold go up by thousands in seconds.
- Ra is the weakest choice from the Egyptian pantheon, but if played well, he can demolish your enemies. While his Rain God Power benefits all villagers on the map, your enemies included, his priests can empower buildings, making him superior in recruiting to the other Egyptian Major Gods. You can easily gather resources with empowered gathering buildings, and priests can also empower monuments, which in turn generate favor much faster.
- His abilities include more hitpoints to certain units, villagers gathering food faster, and monuments empowering nearby buildings.
The Norse Pantheon
- Odin is the most powerful of the Norse Major Gods, and one of the best in Age of Mythology: Retold simply due to his regeneration abilities of infantry and heroes, allowing you to keep your army relatively intact when combating your enemies. He also generates favors faster than the other gods, and food will be no issue as villagers gather it 10% faster.
- His abilities include a set of free ravens that respawn when killed, allowing you to explore the entire map right from the start, and the Great Hunt God Power, which doubles all the animals you hunt, making sure you never run out of food.
- Thor is also a good choice when playing Norse, thanks to his Dwarfev Armory and focus on Hersirs. The first will let you access additional armory upgrades (for a big price, though), making your units extremely powerful permanently. The latter will turn your Hersirs into excellent fighters, generating more favor.
- His abilities include receiving free Dwarves for every Armory upgrade and Dwarves gathering the other resources nearly as fast as Gatherers. Plus, his Dwarven Mine will truly make sure you never run out of gold in the end-game.
- Loki, while not the best Norse God in Age of Mythology: Retold, he is incredibly fun to play with, if you master his abilities. You can get an endless supply of myth units by battling your enemies with infantry, and you can turn the tide of a battle with just this ability alone. You can also build faster than any other Norse god, and Ox Charts are half the price, which is a great ability to have early in the game.
- His other abilities include Spy, which can be used on the enemy’s scouting units to check every little aspect of their games, and turning Dwarves and Gatherers into Berserks for half the price.
- Freyr, the newer Major God added in Age of Mythology Retold, might not be the best, but he’s also very fun to play with. If you love playing on the defensive, Freyr is probably the best god to do so in the whole game, as his abilities will make all of your units have more hitpoints and will let you repair everything for free.
- His God Power summons a very powerful beast for a limited time that can help you effectively defend your Town Centre when under attack. It gets more powerful with each age, and it’s a blast to use it.
The Atlantean Pantheon
- Kronos, arguably the best Atlantean God in the Age of Mythology: Retold, can provide you with some very fun ways to deal with your enemies. His time-shifting abilities will let you shift your military buildings next to your enemies’ bases, effectively engaging them in battle and not letting them develop, which can turn the tides of a match early in the game.
- His other abilities focus on siege units and building. You can not only build faster, but you will also receive resources back when you lose your siege and myth units.
- Gaia is my personal favorite Atlantean God due to her Gaia Forest ability that I use to shield my Citizens from harm, and let the Farm. Aside from this, if you’re playing defensively, Gaia is a suitable choice due to the cheaper costs of technological advancements and turning Citizens into heroes.
- The Economic Guild advancements can be researched a year earlier, giving you a huge advantage when gathering resources.
- Oranos is not the best Atlantean God in the game, but he has his charm. He is best used to scout and attack your enemy from behind, as his Sky Passages, placed at the right location, can easily turn the tide of a battle.
- He also lets you spy on your enemies when damaged, giving you insight into their next steps.
